Assessment and accreditation

Assessment and Accreditation
The Department of Educational Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is proud of its reputation for excellence. Maintaining high standards is an ongoing process in which the entire community contributes to discussion of what we do well and what we hope to do better. We adhere to a sound set of standards and ethics in our practice and our programs.
Accreditation
As part of the continuous improvement effort, ETEC graduate programs are accredited by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), the professional organization for educational technology.etec was officially  reacredited in 2009. AECT is one of the specialized professional associations (SPA) of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the accrediting body of the UH College of Education.
Standards
All ETEC programs and courses have been designed to meet national standards for educational technology. ETEC graduate courses use standards for initial preparation programs from AECT as a basis for objectives and assessment.
Those courses specifically for K-12 teachers, particularly undergraduate classes that are required by COE teacher preparation programs, employ standards from the International Society for Technology in Education(ISTE), including the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) and National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S). These courses also employ the framework from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
Assessment
Assessment of student learning is critical to ensuring program success. Each of our required courses include standards based assessments, with rubrics employed for evaluation of student outcomes. Each Master's student develops a standards-based portfolio of work during their program, with the final portfolio self-assessed by the student and assessed by the faculty. The results of these assessments are regularly reviewed by the department as part of our self-evaluation and improvement process. Samples of student portfolios are found in the Resources section.
